How Did Eddie Izzard Run 43 Marathons in 51 Days
To run a marathon you've got to have the correct training, right? Ever since marathons were invented by the Greeks it was always the strongest that took part, those with bodies with a natural ability to run and endure pain and drain over long distances. The modern marathon is a different matter. With the right advice, training and hints and tips, and also a bit of luck in being selected in the first place, running a marathon has really opened out to more novices. This was the bench mark, until comedian Eddie Izzard completed an amazing act in the UK in September. The funny man and actor, more well known for his stage shows and transvestitism, ran 1,105-mile journey raised £200,000 for Sport Relief. And he did it with just five weeks training. The jury is still out on whether this act of bravery or sheer madness will have a long term effect on his joints. Eddie seems to have been able to do this in the way he trained. Building up slowly, even through his training. His first marathon was completed in a little over 10 hours, similar to a brisk walk with no stopping.By the time he finished in London, England, he was completing the distance in just 30 seconds over the five hour mark. It's Sports scientists put his boosted performance down to the 'training effect'. As the body adjusts to training it copes better with the physical demands as muscles enlarge, the heart rate adapts and lowers, and lung capacity and breathing improves. He took in 5000 to 6000 calories a day. And he had a good backup support team too including a sports therapists. On the finish line all the damage done was blisters and the odd lost toe nail.
