This is probably one of the largest uses of packaging in the modern World today. In numerous countries a lot of food is still bought fresh each day from a market stall, a butcher or a fish shop, all of which food comes with virtually no packaging at all, other than a simple bag to take it away in.However in many countries huge amounts of food is sold pre-packaged. The types of food packaging you may come across do vary a lot, and many food suppliers are looking at ways to reduce their food packaging in order to cut down on the total amount of packaging that the end customer may end up throwing away.Many food suppliers are also looking at ways to change packaging to more eco-friendly methods, with a move to providing more biodegradable and recyclable forms of food packaging.Just a few short years back a large of amount of fresh supermarket food was sold in polystyrene based trays, with a plastic film covering over the top of the food to keep it fresh. In many cases this meant one hundred percent of the packaging could not be recycled.However now many more food stuffs both frozen and fresh, now feature cardboard or aluminium packaging that is recyclable.Much frozen food is still sold in plastic packaging, however once disposed of this does not take up very much space, and when biodegradable plastic is used in future this packaging will be a much greener option.Food packaging will undoubtedly see many changes in the next few years.
